Recently, 40 students from Vista del Lago High School (VDLHS) put a Saturday to good use by attending the UCR Youth Empowerment Conference, sponsored by the UCR MEChA Club and the Chicano Studies Department. MEChA, which stands for Movimiento Estudiantil Chican@ de Aztlán, is a student organization that promotes higher education, culture and history. The conference, held twice each year for high school students, serves as an inspiration for many students. Led by VDLHS MEChA advisor Maria Rivas (MVUSD’s 2013-14 Teacher of the Year) many of the students were visiting a college campus for the first time. The empowering event featured UCR MEChA students and guest speakers who shared their knowledge of A-G college requirements, financial aid, scholarships and more. VDLHS students came away inspired to continue to achieve.
