On any given school day, more than 42,000 students are at MVUSD and Val Verde Unified schools within the city of Moreno Valley. Keeping those students safe is a big responsibility for police, and it starts first thing in the morning as students are coming to school and traffic volume – and sometimes crazy driving practices and pedestrian decisions – are at their worst. According to MVPD, since the start of the 2014-15 school year, there have been 31 non-injury traffic collisions, 16 injury accidents and 20 hit-and-run accidents at or very near the 53 MVUSD and VVUSD schools in the city, which isn't counting the many near accidents caused by jaywalkers dodging traffic, often with children in tow. Police plan to increase traffic enforcement in school zones in the hope of persuading drivers and pedestrians to slow down, use some common sense and help set a better example for each other and for students.
