In addition to being a sergeant with San Bernardino County Sheriff Department, Petty Officer 2nd Class Anthony Vega has committed to serving the nation as a Master at Arms in the United States Navy Reserve assigned to Navy Operational Support Center, Moreno Valley. Vega has earned degrees from Coastline Community College, Union Institute & University, and most recently, National University. In 2010 Vega joined the Navy Reserve and in 2013 he served on the Joint Task Force assigned to the 57th Presidential Inauguration. He has made fitness a way of life, between the Navy’s demanding physical standards and his position as president of the Sheriff’s Athletic Federation. His military career has afforded him education, training, leadership opportunities, and the opportunity to simultaneously advance his civilian career and serve his country. The skills he has gained while serving give him the tools to succeed in the multiple ventures he undertakes. “One of the great benefits I have experienced was the Navy assisting me with my educational ambitions. The Navy paid for a large portion of both my bachelors and masters degrees, which continue to benefit me in both my civilian and military careers,” said Vega. Further, Vega believes his civilian affiliation with law enforcement benefits the Navy Reserve. “With 17 years of civilian law enforcement experience, I am able to bring experience and technical skills to my Master at Arms unit which provides a level of accomplishment," he said. The benefits to being a reservist to a civilian career were relayed early to Vega, prompting him to join the Navy Reserve. “I chose the Navy Reserve because of the vast amount of opportunity the branch offered. Some of my mentors and colleagues in law enforcement had served in the Navy and their level of competency and commitment has always resonated with me.” According to Vega, responsibility for positively affecting communities lies with Sailors. “You can achieve great things. It is up to us as Sailors to make a difference and help our communities; I am honored to do my part.” Vice Admiral Braun, Chief of the Navy Reserve, shared he is proud to lead such a talented and dedicated group of sailors. “The commitment of our talented Sailors to the Navy, their shipmates and their community is truly inspirational,” said Braun. “Their continued dedicated service in support of the Navy, Marine Corps and Joint Force lends credence to our motto: Ready Now. Anytime, Anywhere.” March 3 marked 100 years of the United States Navy Reserve. Throughout the year, Navy Reserve units will be celebrating the accomplishments of Reserve Sailors past and present.
