Bruce Herwig recently won a "People's Choice" Grand Prize in a Nationwide Photo Essay Contest. Herwig was the writer and photographer for this project called "Micah House Makes A Difference", which highlighted the ins and outs of the Micah House after school program located in Redlands.
According to the Leadership Network, “the goal of the contest is to collect photo essays featuring large, Protestant congregations."
Dianna Lawson, program coordinator at Micah House shares that the program is an after school outreach of the Trinity Community Foundation.
The Micah House name is inspired by the Bible verse: Micah 6:8 "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God?" Lawson shares that the organization strives to "put this verse into practice in practical ways."
The purpose of the Micah House after school program is to help kids throughout the community, whether it is homework help or teaching them how to ride a bike.
Last year, some of the students at Micah House partnered up with a local artist and painted a mural in the Micah House flower garden.
In partnership with the city of Redlands, local businesses, and community volunteers, Micah House gave away 1,200 backpacks, filled with school supplies last year.
"This is an opportunity to focus the community on the Micah House... the folks at Micah House deserve all the attention they can get for the great things they do," Herwig shared. "Entering these contests was a great exercise and fun to do. Winning was icing on the cake."
