Friday, July 31, was a rewarding day for kids at the Loma Linda Public Branch Library; it was the finale of the “Excavate Something Big” summer reading program. Kids who had met reading milestones throughout the program were invited to bring their parents to a Star Wars themed event, featuring raffle prizes, popcorn and games. In addition, the 501st Legion, a non-profit organization that dress as characters from the Star Wars series and attend charity events, were present to hand out the prizes and take photos with the children. The reading program, implemented throughout San Bernardino libraries, was designed to help kids retain what they’ve learned from school. “If they read five a week, they retain more,” said Brittany Samperio, a library assistant. The event was to celebrate those who had followed the program from the beginning and stayed with it consistently. Beginning with a display of the 501st Legion’s costumes, it was soon followed by raffle prizes. These prizes consisted of DVD movies, specifically children’s movies, as well as inflatable dinosaurs. When all prizes had been given out, popcorn was served and the children were free to play games such as miniature bowling. They could also have their pictures taken with the 501st Legion. Perhaps the most important aspect about this day was that it showed that these children had fun while reading many books.
