The Grand Terrace Lions Club (GTLC) held their 5k Run/Walk for Freedom at Pico Park on Sunday, Sept. 14. There were 146 participants and proceeds from the event will go to the Veterans Wall of Freedom Project at Pico Park. Lola Fury of the GTLC said, "We hope to raise around ten thousand dollars." Dr. Robin Lie, a local podiatrist who placed in 7th during the race, said, "A lot of my patients are veterans. It's nice to have the opportunity to honor them." The Lions Club often raises money through events and gives to charitable causes in an effort to support its community on an ongoing basis. Dani Bubier, treasurer for the GTLC said, "We give community scholarships. They have to be a resident of Grand Terrace, but can attend any high school. Our biggest fundraiser is coming up - the Pot of Gold benefit." The 5k walk is a part of the Healthy City Initiative. Grand Terrace Mayoral candidate and participant in the event, Darcy McNaboe said, "The healthy city initiative helps cities focus on healthy activities and eating." Kristine Worden of Compassionate Touch, who ran a massage booth at the weekend's Family Health and Fitness Fair that followed the event said, "Massage is a great way to combat exertion. It helps fluids move through the body."
