The Morning Optimist Club will for the fifth year in a row present Varsity Jackets to financially challenged student athletes at each of the Moreno Valley Unified School Districts (MVUSD) comprehensive High Schools. At the December 12th MVUSD school board meeting, the Optimist club will present 12 Varsity Jackets, to three students from each from Moreno Valley HS, Valley View HS, Canyon Springs HS and Vista Del Lago HS. The presentation will take place at the District Headquarters beginning at 7:00 p.m.
“Each of the students receiving jackets must have maintained a 2.8 grade point average, have a financial hardship and commit to 10 hours of community service work in an Optimist Club approved project” according to Club President Oscar Valdepena.
The program would not be possible without the support of community businesses and individuals. This year’s sponsors include: Waste Management (2 jackets), Altura Credit Union, Dental Associates of Moreno Valley, Les Schwab Tires, Moreno Valley Rotary Club, Moreno Valley High School Class of 66’ as well as several club and community individuals.
“We are very proud of this program and that we are able to support these student athletes. With these, the Optimist Club has given out 84 Jackets since the club started this program”, according to George Price, Committee Chair for this program.
