Letterman’s jackets can run as high as $500, which is just too expensive for many families.
However, at the Oct. 27 School Board meeting, 24 student-athletes from Moreno Valley Unified high schools were presented with the jackets they deserve.
More than $6,800 was raised by the Moreno Valley Morning Optimist Club in conjunction with MVUSD, and through generous donations including from assisted-living facility Renaissance Village.
Lefty’s Sports Outfitters contributed by cutting the price of jackets down to $275 each.
“This is about recognizing student achievement,” explained Superintendent Dr. Judy D. White, “and about fostering an overall culture of achievement at our high schools.”
To be eligible to receive a jacket, students had to demonstrate economic need and have a minimum 2.8 grade-point average.
