Scheduled closure of the eastbound Interstate 10 at the Tippecanoe Avenue/Anderson Street off-ramp will take place this weekend.

As part of the I-10 Tippecanoe Interchange Improvement Project, Phase I, a short-term closure of the eastbound I-10 Tippecanoe Avenue/Anderson Street off-ramp was scheduled to take place on the weekend of Dec. 21, 2013. Due to schedule changes initiated by the contractor, this short-term closure has been rescheduled for Jan. 10, beginning at 11 p.m. and lasting through Jan. 12, ending at 6 p.m. Construction activities include adding an additional lane to complement the existing lane. These two lanes will ultimately tie into the four new lanes. Construction activities during this stage will be monitored very closely and every precaution will be taken to ensure a timely opening. Completion of this work is designed to increase traffic throughout and alleviate queuing of vehicles on Interstate 10, making a more efficient and safer route of travel. The Tippecanoe Avenue/Anderson Street interchange is infamous for its traffic congestion and operational challenges; closely spaced traffic signals, crowded streets, congested freeway ramps, too few travel lanes and too few turn lanes create significant delays in this area. The interchange reconstruction is intended to not only improve traffic flow at the freeway interchange but also to enhance traffic circulation along city streets. The proposed improvements also would enhance access to the Loma Linda University and Medical Center, the Jerry Pettis Memorial Veterans Administration Medical Center, the San Bernardino International Trade Center, the San Bernardino International Airport, and local retail centers. Proposed interchange design elements include: widening the freeway eastbound off-ramp, new westbound on- and off-ramps, widening the Anderson Street/Redlands Boulevard intersection, and the addition of an auxiliary lane on the eastbound I-10 between Waterman and Tippecanoe avenues. SANBAG (San Bernardino Associated Governments) is working in partnership with Caltrans, the city of San Bernardino, and the city of Loma Linda for the reconstruction of the I-10 Tippecanoe Avenue/Anderson Street interchange. Preliminary engineering and environmental studies began in 2004. In 2011, the project was split into two phases. Phase I working on the eastbound I-10 offramp and Phase II to complete the work on the northern portion of the interchange and improvements to Tippecanoe/Anderson Street. Construction for Phase I began in August 2012. For more information on this project, visit www.sangbag.ca/gov/projects/interchange_tippecanoe.
