The application process for the 2018-19 San Bernardino County Civil Grand Jury is being accepted on April 6, 2018. Applicants that are chosen for the grand jury will serve for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2018, and end on June 30, 2019. The civil grand jury is charged by the California Penal Code to investigate all aspects of county governance, including cities and special districts and also potentially hear information on certain criminal investigations. All communications to the grand jury are confidential and every signed citizen complaint is responded to after it is investigated. A grand juror’s service averages between three to five full working days per week, which is compensated at $25 per day, plus meals and appropriate mileage. The grand jury meeting place is normally in the city of San Bernardino. In order to be selected, a person must be at least 18 years of age, a United States citizen, and a resident of California and San Bernardino County for at least one year before the appointment. Ancillary requirements include that a person have sufficient knowledge of the English language, possession of natural faculties, ordinary intelligence, sound judgement and good character. Elected officials are not eligible per law. In order to get an application, you can download a copy at cms.sbcounty.gov/grandjury/BecomingaGrandJuror.aspx. Applications can be obtained at 172 W. Third St., second floor, San Bernardino, or by calling 909-387-9120.
