MORENO VALLEY>> Students at La Jolla Elementary School are taking home a monthly project, but it’s not just for the kids. The students are being encouraged to invite family members to help with the STEAM Family Challenge each month. At the beginning of the month, students are given instructions for the project where they must create a specific item or are told items to use to create any project. This September, the students could use their creativity to make anything as long as it incorporated an unsharpened pencil. Some examples of things that the students could create include a musical instrument, something to wear or an object that moves. The student must explain the purpose or the problem solved by their creation. The idea is to engage families to stimulate a higher level of STEAM thinking. STEAM is a science based business club that works to provide students with opportunities to learn important life skills. Through these skills it is hoped that each student participating learns the concepts of business and entrepreneurship, as well as creativity through the conception of ideas they form as part of their projects.
