Plato coined a metaphor for government as the captain of the ship of state. Our “captain” over at City Hall has piloted our ship onto the rocks. But no need for them to worry: They have a hostage—the threat of disincorporation—if we don’t vote for their abusive utility tax. This is a tax on every utility in your household—even on phones that aren’t used in the city. It would sure be great if I could increase my wealth by taxing the populace—but no, I have to live within my budget, just like everyone in the city. As should City Hall itself. The economy is still in terrible shape, and the residents of our city don’t have this kind of money to throw around. The most sensible thing the few proponents of Measure C could do come November is to call City Hall’s bluff and vote no on Measure C. What’s the worst that could happen? That we will disincorporate and all the “captains” over at City Hall have to seek gainful employment elsewhere? They will never let that happen. Vote “NO” on Measure C.
