The workshop for Myofascial Release 101.

This weekend we hosted our Myofascial Release 101, Radical Back Pain Relief Workshop. We had over 50 inquiries and two sold out workshop events. If you were not able to reserve your seat and attend, you were missed. However, I want to share with you the main points that were shared at the event. 1) Length over strength.  2) The FORGOTTEN ORGAN, the Myofascia.  3) Structure and balance.  1) Length over strength is a philosophy and practice method I have used for over 12 years. Lengthening out the dysfunction of the connective tissue yields greater results than focusing on strengthening the restricted tissue. I have seen this approach work on the very elderly (+80yrs) and the very young (2-3 yrs old), male and female. This approach emphasizes that your tissue has to be pliable and extensible for it to work and operate optimally. 98% of my patient population has limitations in their connective tissue which has forced me to change my treatment approach for their benefit. 2) The “forgotten organ” is also known as your Myofascia. It is a 3-dimensional connective tissue that spans throughout your whole body. It has no void in it, and it is intricately involved with circulation, strength, balance, nerve conduction, and tissue repair.  3) Your structure/balance of your human frame is vital. I asked the participants to visualize if they have witnessed anybody that: • stands lopsided  • stands leaning, like the leaning “Tower of Pisa”   • have one shoulder that rests higher than the other If you can visualize someone like that, they are a walking example of an unsymmetrical structure. Your human frame is designed to be symmetrical and proportional, when dysfunctions occur in our body these asymmetries show up and we end of compensating versus correcting. Pelvic balance is a fundamental key ingredient to make sure that what is happening on your right side and your left side has cohesion. Along with some good information we also offered easy and effective changes that could be done immediately.  Getting yourself a custom fitted pillow was one of the options. Has anybody ever measured you for a pillow? My guess is probably not. It makes so much sense now that I have introduced it to my patients (and I use one myself and my sleep has improved greatly). Think about it, neck issues are so common, how come nobody has thought of this before?  We go to great lengths to get right fitting shoes or hats, but for our head and neck, we’ll settle for some generic mass made of feathers or cloth bag that is not designed for the multiple positions each person sleeps and rests.  Also, how about orthotics? Do you know how many arches are in your feet? Do you know if you have a dropped arch? Are your feet symmetrical?  Do you know that if your feet are not supported correctly, they will directly affect your limbs and trunk?  Getting a custom fitting orthotics which is specialized to look at your right and left foot individually is simple and easy, and it is the easiest thing to do.
