REDLANDS>> The community is invited to learn more about the Guide Dogs of the Desert with speakers Tom Rash and Lynne Elwan at the Redlands Community Senior Center’s Dessert and Dialogue program from noon to 12:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21.
Rash and Elwan will discuss how the Guide Dogs of the Desert provide custom trained guide dogs for the blind, and for those with special needs, for safe mobility, companionship and independence. Guide Dogs of the Desert was founded on the premise that every legally blind person, including those with multiple disabilities, should have the opportunity to have a guide dog. Guide dogs, equipment and custom training are all provided at no cost to the clients served by the organization.
Rash, who is legally blind, is a graduate of Guide Dogs of the Desert. He will share his story, including how he was hit by a car twice while walking with a white cane. He will also provide insight about the independence and freedom he gained after receiving his guide dog from Guide Dogs of the Desert.
Elwan is the Director of Development and responsible for philanthropy and donor relations at Guide Dogs of the Desert. Elwan oversees all aspects of fund development to maximize financial gift support for the organization, with an emphasis on the annual fund, internal and external event management and major gifts.
Dessert and Dialogue takes place after the senior nutritional lunch program at the Redlands Community Senior Center. Hot meals are served Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The program is open to all adults. A suggested donation of $3 is appreciated for those 60 or older, guests under 60 may enjoy lunch for a $6 fee.
