MORENO VALLEY>> On Oct. 24-25, educators from around the nation converged in Moreno Valley for the national BARR Fall Gathering. BARR, which stands for Building Assets, Reducing Risks, is a federal Investing in Innovation grant that helps schools provide targeted intervention for students at a critical moment in their academic lives, preventing school failure and dropout. Moreno Valley Unified is a BARR grant recipient. “We’re very proud to be hosting the BARR Fall Gathering,” said MVUSD Chief Academic Officer Dr. Martinrex Kedziora. “We’ve had some amazing success stories in our district about BARR literally coming to the rescue of students and keeping them stay in school and on track to graduation and beyond. MoVal is the perfect place to highlight what BARR can do.” BARR is built upon the belief that teacher effectiveness is essential to student success and school turnaround, and that effectiveness is affected by intersecting variables, including the extent to which teachers have opportunities for peer-to-peer learning and collaboration; time and resources needed to build positive relationships with their colleagues and students; and support from parents and school leaders. BARR creates highly effective teacher teams using a unique blend of interrelated approaches designed to impact these three critical variables.
