Numerous municipal agencies helped raise more than $12,000 for Loma Linda University Cancer Center during its 2019 No Shave November initiative, which raised the highest amount and drew participation from the most number agencies in the history of the event.

The San Bernardino Police Department, Montclair Police Department, Chino Police Department and the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s office all pitched in this year to raise money in the month of November. In total, all entities raised $12,140.

Loma Linda University Cancer Center Executive Director, Judy Chatigny, RN, MSN, said she was grateful to see the fundraiser grow in a way that ultimately benefits the patients who enter the cancer center doors.

“We collaborate every year to promote awareness, prevention, early detection and research,” Chatigny said. “It is exciting to see this partnership expand this year to other law enforcement agencies that share our passion and vision.”

In addition to raising funds, members of both law enforcement agencies and staff at Loma Linda University Health grew out hair on their mustaches, beards, and legs (for the ladies) in hopes of taking home a coveted trophy in these five categories: best attempt, best mustache, best beard, whitest beard and hairiest legs. The award ceremony was hosted at San Manuel Gateway College on Dec. 2.

San Bernardino Police Interim Chief Eric McBride said cancer is a cause close to his heart because he has had family members and friends impacted by the disease. McBride said he lost his father to cancer, his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and his brothers were recently diagnosed with prostate cancer.

“Cancer touches everybody, and it is of great concern to me,” McBride said. “It is an honor to participate in a great endeavor that helps promote an excellent cancer research facility nearby.”
