Spooky music played in the background as seniors celebrated Halloween in style with costumes, candy, food, games, and prizes. Hutton Senior Center and the Luque Community Center Seniors gathered at the 3rd Annual Monster Bash, hosted by the Luque Community Center in Colton. Recreation specialist, Lisa Harris, planned several games for the seniors to play, from “Light the Pumpkin” to a Mummy Wrapping Contest. Seniors even got to make special Halloween crafts and treats such as a paper pumpkin and teeth made out of marshmallows, peanut butter, and apples. The early bird seniors that trickled in enjoyed an early morning breakfast of warm coffee and pastries that were generously donated by Starbucks. Those who came later were served hot dogs, baked beans, coleslaw and, of course, candy. The costume contest was a huge hit, as seniors were able to vote for their favorite costumes. First place winners, Raul and Rosie Perez won dressed as Cruella De Vil and a Dalmatian dog. Second place was Annie Rodriguez, who came dressed as La Llorona, and third place went to Evelyn Valdez who came dressed as a nun. The picture booth set up by the center was a perfect backdrop for all the seniors who came dressed up to take pictures to give to their families. Seniors had a blast, not only because of the games and amazing decorations, but because of the family atmosphere that the center has provided them. Eighty year-old, Edna Aldeen, who has been coming to the center with her husband Leon Aldeen for ten years said, “Our kids are all grown up, this is my new family now. We’re so thankful to the center and I know that they will help me with anything I need. We love it here.” The other seniors seemed to share the Aldeen’s feelings about the Luque Center, and that was evident in the laughter that resonated throughout the room during the 3rd Annual Monster Bash.
