The Moreno Valley City Council unanimously approved a comprehensive plan to reimagine the Moreno Valley Mall at a recent City Council meeting.
The plan, brought forth by representatives from the Moreno Valley Mall, will ensure the mall’s continued viability for generations to come. Under the plan, the mall, located within Moreno Valley’s first district, will add over 1,600 residential units, roughly 40,000 square feet of retail space, 60,000 square feet of office space, and two hotels totaling 270 rooms and a conference center. These new additions will be built on existing parking lot space around the eastern end of the mall.
“The Moreno Valley Mall is a gateway to our city, and this project represents a crucial step forward in bringing exciting options to live, work, and play to Moreno Valley,” said Mayor Ulises Cabrera. “Our community deserves a project like this, and I am thrilled our partners at the Moreno Valley Mall have brought forth a forward-thinking plan that will rejuvenate the western end of our city.”
“Growing up near the Moreno Valley Mall, I have seen great opportunities for revitalization not only at the mall itself but in the surrounding area as well,” said District 1 Council Member Elena Baca-Santa Cruz. “This project will reaffirm the mall as a regional destination point, and it has the potential to generate millions of dollars each year in economic benefit and provide thousands of new, well-paying jobs.”
In addition to the improvements around the mall, the plan also calls for the existing mall to be remodeled with enhanced interior elements and improvements to the façade. The former Gottschalks building will become a new retail anchor, while the former Sears building will become a multi-tenant retail space.
A public central plaza will also be part of the plan, providing residents with a community gathering space that will connect the existing mall with the planned new buildings.
Groundbreaking for the project is expected to begin in 2024.
