Every September the Colton Police Department (Colton PD) and the Fire Department reflect on 9/11 and how it has affected our nation. This month, the THINK Together program at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School has taken a different take on it. THINK Together is an after school program that has a goal to provide quality education-based programs for students regardless of culture, race, or their socioeconomic status. The goal of the program is to improve the academic outcomes for young students living in under-resourced communities. Hence, the acronym THINK: Teaching, Helping, Inspiring and Nurturing Kids. They have focused on honoring local heroes and have tied it in with the 9/11 tragedy, so the students can be informed on the heroes who have fallen during the tragedy of 9/11 but also be informed of the local active members who currently serve for our country. Event organizers share that children throughout the community should be informed on how they protect and serve our city. The children and other attendees were given a run down of the daily lives of these Colton Police officers and firefighters and what it takes to be a part of the Department, their responsibilities and how it affects everyone around them.
