Looking Ahead as Residents Are Asked to Help Shape the City's Future

What should Grand Terrace look like more than a decade from now? The City is putting that question directly to the people who live there through its new Vision 2040 Community Survey.

Grand Terrace residents are being invited to help shape the city's long-term future through the Vision 2040 Community Survey, an initiative announced by the City on August 12. The survey gives community members an opportunity to share ideas and priorities as Grand Terrace considers what residents want their city to become in the years ahead. Rather than limiting long-range planning to City Hall, the effort brings residents into the conversation and asks them to think beyond immediate concerns toward the kind of community they hope future generations will inherit. The City is encouraging residents to participate and share their ideas as part of the Vision 2040 process.

Long-term planning carries particular importance in Grand Terrace because the city occupies a unique position within the Inland Empire. Situated along the I-215 corridor between Riverside and San Bernardino, Grand Terrace has access to two major metropolitan areas while maintaining the smaller-community character that residents have worked to preserve. The City describes itself as a place where quality of life, safe neighborhoods, parks, clean streets, natural beauty and an engaged community are central to its identity. Those qualities can become increasingly important as surrounding areas grow and development pressures change the region.

The Vision 2040 survey gives residents an opportunity to consider how that identity should evolve. Long-range community planning can touch nearly every part of daily life, including transportation, housing, parks, economic development, infrastructure, public spaces and the balance between new development and established neighborhoods. Community input is valuable because residents experience the city differently. A parent raising children may prioritize parks and safe routes to school, while a senior may focus on transportation and accessible services. Business owners may see opportunities for economic development, while longtime residents may place particular value on preserving Grand Terrace's character. Gathering those different perspectives can give decision-makers a clearer picture of what the community values most.

Grand Terrace has changed considerably since its incorporation in 1978, yet its relatively small size has allowed residents to remain closely connected to local government. Vision 2040 represents another chapter in that tradition of civic participation. The decisions made in the coming years could influence what Grand Terrace looks and feels like well into the next generation. A survey may seem like a small action, but when residents take the time to participate, those individual responses can collectively tell an important story about where a community wants to go. As Grand Terrace looks toward 2040, the most meaningful vision may be one created not for its residents, but with them.
