The 31st  Annual Colton Joint Unified School District Science Fair took place last week, with judging on Saturday, Feb. 9, and an awards ceremony on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

Students in kindergarten through 12th grade in all CJUSD schools have been busily working on projects and sites held school science fairs last month. Approximately 240 projects have been entered into this year’s district competition. Judging took place on Saturday, Feb. 9 in the Bloomington High School gym. Students in grades 6-12 were interviewed by a panel of judges about their projects.

The awards ceremony, which is open to the public, takes place from 6:00-7:30 PM on Tuesday, Feb. 12 in the Bloomington High School auditorium. The top district winners in grades 4-12 will advance to the SIM (San Bernardino, Inyo, and Mono counties) Science and Engineering Fair to be held in April. Top district winners at all grade levels will receive awards.

Dr. Syed Hyder, CJUSD Director of Elementary Curriculum and Instruction, noted that aside from the prizes, participation in Science Fair activities helps students to learn important concepts.

“Currently, there is a nationwide focus to promote and strengthen science, technology, and mathematics education in our K-12 schools. Science Fair is a hands-on, engaging way to help students to think like scientists and find answers to complex scientific phenomena. Science Fair provides an opportunity for students who enjoy science to demonstrate their creativity and thinking and can be a gateway to science for other students as well.”

The SIM Science and Engineering Fair competition is Tuesday, April 2 at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. The SIM Fair Awards Ceremony will take place at 6:00 PM (doors open at 5:30 PM) Thursday, April 4 at the Doubletree by Hilton Ontario Airport hotel, 222 N. Vineyard Ave. in Ontario. Winners of the SIM fair advance to the California State Science Fair, which takes place April 29-30 at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.
