COLTON>> Sarah Zamora, former Colton mayor and long-time Colton resident, is running in the race of Colton City Council District 6. “After taking two years to relax, I decided to roll up my sleeves and get back to work for the community,” she said. “I feel I have gained experience as a mayor and a council member that would contribute to help build up Colton to reach our fullest potential.” Zamora was married to David Zamora, former Colton Mayor, for 35 years when he passed away during his term as mayor. Zamora was appointed to fill the position and served as the mayor from 2011-2014. “I have built a reputation that Colton voters can trust and have confidence in,” she said. With a desire to return to the council, Zamora said she wants to make a difference again and will work to bring businesses to the city of Colton to bring in revenue. “I see things that need improvement,” she said. “We need to be business friendly. As a former mayor, I still have a lot of contacts with people that own business and some residents feel there are concerns that there are a lot of empty businesses.” One thing she said she feels is a big concern to residents is the appearance of the city and its streets and although the city may be limited on the budget, she said bringing in businesses can make a big impact which will generate revenue to help clean the city. “What our city look like has a big impact on people who want to live here and shop here,” she said. With bringing in more businesses, Zamora said Colton should have a large shopping center like Citrus Plaza in Redlands or Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga. “People take pride in their city when more things are made available. Shop Colton, we want to keep our money here,” she said. If elected, Zamora explained she wants to be sure people feel as though they can openly and comfortably talk to the city representatives and employees. “It’s always a good feeling to help people,” she said. “It makes such a huge impact. If you can help one person, you have already made an impact in the world.” Zamora has three daughters, Mia Zamora-Johnson, Alexa Zamora and Summer Jorrin, a current Colton City Council Member who she would be working with if elected. Zamora said she has a good relationship with Summer and had a conversation about what it would be like working together. “We are very respectful of each other,” Zamora said. “We just know we are going to work hard for the city. It’s not going to be about us. It’s going to be about the city and we both have that desire to serve. I know we won’t always agree but we will agree to disagree.” One accomplishment she said she is proud of is the completion of The Villas, a senior housing complex that her husband had planned and started for the city. “Residents want to feel safe and protected,” she said. “They want to visually see improvements in their areas and know that their taxes are being spent wisely. They want to feel they can trust their representatives and know they listen to their concerns.” Paid for by the Committee to Elect Sarah Zamora City Council 2016.
