During the month of May residents will have the opportunity to view the artwork of one of the icons of the visual arts in San Bernardino. Vivian Kassel began painting when her children started school. She studied under Redlands art instructor Beryl Larkin in all media, starting with oils, moving on to acrylics and finding a niche in watercolors. Always ready to learn, she took many painting workshops by well-known artists. In her continuing membership in the San Bernardino Art Association, she served five terms as president and took other important assignments, including Juried International Exhibit Chairperson. She was also active in the Redlands Art Association and the Fine Arts Institute at the San Bernardino County Museum. Kassel is also a past member of the Los Angeles Art Association, the Beverly Hills Arts Association and the Palm Springs Art Museum. She has received many awards from local and national art organizations. “I love all arts, but I feel closest to abstract art; most of my paintings are considered to be abstract or contemporary,” she said. Kassel lives in Highland and is active as an artist. She gathers regularly with some of the “old time” members of the SBAA. Her one-woman exhibition, entitled “Art in the Abstract,” will open on Saturday, May 2 from noon to 6 p.m., and will continue for the same hours on Fridays and Saturdays until Saturday, May 30 at the National Orange Show Gallery, located at 689 South E Street in San Bernardino. Some of Kassel’s paintings will be for sale.
