Morning Glory Quilters and Crafters, a Social Group

GRAND TERRACE>> Long before the days of automated machines, women and some men have enjoyed needlepoint, crocheting, knitting, and embroidering.

Once a necessity, these skills have transitioned to the status of hobby and less and less people find joy in the art.

The Morning Glory Quilters and Crafters, based out of Grand Terrace, California, are not one such group.

Every Monday, the group meets at the Grand Terrace Senior Center to relax and journey back to that more simplistic way of life.

The group focuses on more hand work, including crochet, knitting, embroidery and needlepoint. Not to say there aren’t some who enjoy bringing sewing machines. “Some use machines, but

everybody kind of works on their own project,” said Volunteer Director of Senior Services, Flo Elliott.

As in the olden days, the group also functions as a social cabinet, with the members using the time to better get to know one another and their community. “It’s not a teaching group, but if you get stuck you have people there who can help you,” said Elliott.

The Morning Glory Quilters and Crafters are also very involved in the local community. Recently, the organization worked with Santa Claus Inc. to make quilts for needy children ages two and under.

Last year, the Morning Glory Quilters gave away 900 quilts, which was quite a feat.

The group worked in teams to create the quilts. One member would create the top layer and the other members would work on completing the next stage, which was the machine portion of the project. “It’s a very cooperative group,” said Elliott.

The Morning Glory Quilters and Crafters invite anyone who loves sewing, crocheting, or handwork to come and join them.
