The California Energy Commission announced Superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora as a Clean Energy Champion. The 3rd annual awards honor those making exceptional contributions to help California achieve a 100 percent clean energy future for all.

“This recognition is truly amazing,” said Dr. Kedziora. “This could not be possible without the support, dedication, and commitment of our outstanding staff who work tirelessly to create a safe learning environment for our future leaders.”

The Commission recognized six leaders at a December 8 ceremony held in person at the California Natural Resources Agency Auditorium and remotely via Zoom.

The 2022 recipients are:

  • Lifetime Achievement - Dr. Carol Zabin, Founder, University of California Berkeley Labor Center Green Economy Program
  • Youth Game-Changer Award - Kelly Tung, President and Executive Director, Youth Environmental Power Initiative
  • Tribal Champion - Tishmall Turner, Vice Chairwoman, Rincon Tribal Council, Rincon Band of Luiseño Indians
  • Clean Energy Champion - Dr. Martinrex Kedziora, Superintendent of Schools, Moreno Valley Unified School District
  • Clean Energy Champion - Sean Armstrong, Managing Principal, Redwood Energy
  • Clean Energy Champion - Nalleli Cobo, Cofounder, People Not Pozos and South Central Youth Leadership Coalition

The Clean Energy Champion awards recognize individuals who are combating climate change and contributing to California’s clean energy future through their bold moves, leadership, and innovative ideas while helping benefit communities in California through more equitable outcomes.

“We are so excited to celebrate Dr. Kedziora for this special recognition,” said School Board President Cleveland Johnson. “There is a lot of great work that we are doing here and this is a testament to the impact that it has on our students and our community.”

“Due to his incredible leadership, our district is transitioning a fleet of 117 school buses to be powered by clean energy sources,” said Director of Transportation Jim Burleson in the nomination. “Forty-two buses will be electric school buses, which means our district will have the largest fleet in the state.”
