Roy Thomas Breyer was born in Redlands on Aug. 4, 1932 to John and Ruth Breyer. He and his older brother, John, were raised in San Bernardino, where they enjoyed playing ball, exploring their town, and climbing their favorite tree in their front yard. Like his parents did for him, Roy provided a loving and supportive environment for his own family. Roy excelled as an athlete and student at St. Bernardine’s High School. With his friendly disposition and his desire to be involved in school, Roy and his friends Roger Harmon, Frank Livacich, Matt Karney, Jim Collett and Eddie Malinde became known as the “Big Six,” leaving an indelible impression on the staff and students of their alma mater. The group remains friends to this day. Drafted into the US Army in 1952, Roy completed basic training at Fort Ord and then was assigned to the atomic bomb testing site in Nevada. He was honorably discharged from the military in 1954. At 21, Roy met Marty Morrison, the love of his life, and they were married Aug. 16, 1952 at Immaculate Conception Church in Colton. They shared 61 years of marriage and had three daughters: Becky, Shauna and Erin. The family settled in Grand Terrace, where Roy became an active and contributing member of the community. In the Grand Terrace Lions Club, he took on leadership roles and supported several local causes. The Lions Club honored him as a Melvin Jones Fellow. He was also appointed to serve on the local school board prior to its unification with Colton. Roy was the successful business owner of Breyer’s Liquor Store in Riverside, was an avid card player and golfer— he always looked forward to the annual Lion’s Club golf tournament with his grandsons, finishing each year at the top of the leaderboard, and was known for his punctuality (his nuclear watch told time to the millisecond). A proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Roy and his wife Marty often attended various plays, band performances, soccer games, football games, wrestling matches, graduations, award ceremonies and birthdays. He is survived by his wife, Marty, three daughters, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His remains were interred at the Riverside National Cemetery following memorial services at Beaumont Presbyterian Church on Aug. 7.
