The Colton Fire Department, Colton Unified School District and the Colton Walmart worked together to provide a holiday shopping spree for children within the Colton Unified School District. Colton Firefighters sponsored 50 children this year so that each could spend $100 on holiday shopping at the local Walmart. This was the 18th year of the event, alternating between the eight elementary schools within the Colton school district each year. Over the past 18 years, with the help from local sponsors, the Colton Fire Department has raised over $75,000 and helped over 750 children. All of the children were transported via school bus to Fire Station 211 at approximately 8:50 a.m Dec. 17. From there they boarded fire engines and drove, with lights and sirens on, down Mt. Vernon to the Walmart at 1120 S. Mt. Vernon. Santa Claus and city officials led the way while the Colton Police Department blocked the streets. Each child was then escorted by a firefighter around the store to spend their $100 on whatever they wanted. McDonalds provided lunch to every student following the shopping spree.
