The Director of Public Works has been given direction by the Board of Supervisors to advertise bids for the bridge replacement project on Garnet Street at Mill Creek in Mentone. The project consists of removing the existing steel truss bridge and constructing a new bridge while also conducting roadway reconstruction north and south of the bridge. The Board of Supervisors also approved the construction of Loma Linda Vets, an affordable housing unit for military veterans. The new construction housing development will consist of 88 apartments for veterans and their families, 50 of which will be supportive housing. The project is located within the city of Loma Linda and is less than ¼ mile from the Loma Linda VA Hospital. Loma Linda Vets will offer 40 1-bedroom, 30 2-bedroom, and 18 3-bedroom units, including 1 two-bedroom manager's unit. This housing development will assist in the overall effort to prevent and end veteran homelessness by providing permanent housing units dedicated to serve eligible low-income as well as homeless veterans with supportive services provided in partnership with local government and non-profit service providers. Chairman James Ramos commented, “Last year, we achieved the goal of housing 100% of the county’s homeless veterans. We are very proud of this accomplishment and we will continue to search for funding opportunities to bring more services and more housing units like Loma Linda Vets, to our county’s homeless veterans and their families.”
