Traditional Open House to Bring Redlands Back to 1860

The Lincoln Memorial Shrine in Redlands will celebrate its 43rd annual Open House this Sunday, Feb. 8, by unveiling the fifth and final part of an exhibit series focusing on the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War. The festivities and entertainment will run from noon to 3 p.m. The new exhibit, “1865: Triumph and Tragedy,” focuses on the dramatic events that ended the war and restored the union of the United States. Original manuscripts will be combined with illustrations and artifacts to convey the important developments of the final year of the war. The exhibit will explore the end of slavery through the ratification of the 13th Amendment, Abraham Lincoln’s second inauguration, Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House, the collapse of the Confederacy, the assassination of President Lincoln, and more. In addition to the new exhibit, the Sunday event will feature Civil War re-enactors, including artillery demonstrations by the 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery, members of the 7th Michigan Volunteer cavalry on horseback, and Mr. Lincoln presenting the second inaugural address. “Over the years the open house has become a great celebration of all things related to the life and times of Abraham Lincoln,” said Director Don McCue. “The unveiling of our new exhibit, combined with live music and re-enactors should make for a great day for guests of all ages.” Refreshments will be served by the museum’s docents and entertainment will be provided by fiddler Bill Bell and his Civil War quartet. Colorful balloons will be provided for the youngsters and the Lincoln Log play area will be set up in front of the building. A new feature will be the addition of a large play area sponsored by the Inland Empire LEGO User Group complete with a LEGO Civil War battle scene and Abraham Lincoln LEGO figure.
