RPD Introduces New Technology to Combat Property Crime

In its continuing effort to combat property crime in Redlands, the Redlands Police Department (RPD) has added CopDots, a new technology that will give law enforcement and the community a tool to combat property theft. Referred to as “DNA for your property,” CopDots is microdot technology that enables consumers to mark their personal property. For many years, Neighborhood Watch Programs and law enforcement agencies have recommended owner-applied identification numbers to mark valuables. CopDots is the first-of-its-kind technology to add permanent personal identification markings. The pen-like applicator dispenses adhesive containing thousands of microdots, each smaller than a grain of sand. Each microdot has a unique identification number that is registered in the CopDots law enforcement-accessible database. Each pen is registered online by the owner and no two pens have the same number, hence the term “DNA for your personal property.” When the dots are seen under a reader, the rightful owner can be identified, property returned and the thief can be sent to jail. Every law enforcement agency can have access to the secure database to research the ownership of the property in real time. Applicator pens are available at Lowe’s Hardware stores, including the Redlands store, for approximately $30 each. Each pen can mark between 30 and 50 items. RPD personnel have been provided with equipment needed to locate and read the microdots and access the database. CopDots President Shawn Andreas stated, “We are very excited to bring this new technology to the western part of the U.S. and begin here in Southern California partnering with some of the technologically advanced agencies in the country. This technology is not just an excellent method to identify and return stolen and lost property to its rightful owner, but it will act as a deterrent to criminals that target personal property. This technology will change the way law enforcement fights property crimes.” Redlands Police Chief Mark Garcia stated, “CopDots is just one more tool that RPD has added to help our community to protect their property. Along with our newly introduced While You’re Away program that allows residents to check out GPS trackers that attach to their valuables when they are on vacation, we are giving residents the tools they need to take away those opportunities for thieves.” For more information on CopDots, please contact Seth Weinger at sweinger@dots-usa.com or go to www.copdots.com for more information.
