Dozens of award-winning entries from students in 4th and 5th grade, junior grades 6-8 and senior grades 9-12 divisions were honored at the Riverside County National History Day Competition held at Ramona High School in Riverside on Saturday, March 18, 2017. The RCOE website states that National History Day is a year-long educational program in which students in grades 4-12 become historians. After selecting a historical topic that relates to an annual theme, students conduct extensive research by using libraries, archives, museums, and oral history interviews. “(The students) analyze and interpret their findings, draw conclusions about the significance of their topics in history and create final projects to present their work,” the site states. The first, second and third place finishers in all divisions, advance to the National History Day-California State Competition in Rocklin, California on May 6-7, 2017. From the state competition, winners will advance to the National History Day Competition, June 11-15, 2017, at the University of Maryland, College Park. Featuring the 2017 theme of “Taking a Stand in History,” the competition featured a record number of participants for the fifth consecutive year—including 215 entries from 378 students from 15 districts and 58 schools.   In the Junior Group Performance category, Shalie Fratt, Mia Hawat, Jadyn Roscelle Patos, Bella Rodriguez, Nicole Romero from Vista Heights Middle School took third place.
