The City of Redlands has been awarded a $30 million State of California Homekey grant for development of an existing motel to supportive housing to provide shelter and services for the City’s homeless population, one of 13 new Homekey projects statewide.
Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday, March 15, announced $181 million in funding for 13 new Homekey projects across the state. When fully operational, the projects will provide 605 housing units for people experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, homelessness.
Today’s announcement, when added to recent Homekey Round 2 awards, means the state has funded 39 projects statewide so far this year, for a total allocation of more than $695 million. Since announcing the $2.75 billion extension of Homekey back in September, the state has already approved projects that – when completed – will create over 2,400 units of housing for Californians most in need of a home.
On November 16, 2021, the Redlands City Council approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Shangri-La Industries and Step-Up on Second for the development and provision of supportive services to convert the Good Nite Inn, an existing 99-unit motel located on Industrial Park Avenue west of Alabama Street, into a 98-room residence to provide supportive housing and serve individuals experiencing homelessness, chronically homeless or at-risk of homelessness with incomes equal to or less than 30 percent of Area Median Income.
Following the approval, City staff prepared and submitted a Homekey grant application to fund a substantial portion of the purchase and operations of the project.
“This transitional housing plan is one of the most significant steps the City of Redlands has taken to address the issue of homelessness in our town,” said Mayor Paul Barich, following the announcement. “Providing housing and services for our homeless population and addressing the quality of life issues brought on by homelessness has been one of the most important issues our city faces. This grant will provide the resources we need to make a significant impact.”
With permit approval, renovation of the motel is expected to begin with 45 to 60 days.
