Parents of Incoming 7th graders Reminded of Tdap Booster Requirement

Pertussis, more commonly known as Whooping Cough, is a potential killer. That’s why California state law requires all incoming seventh-graders to show proof that they have received what’s called the Tdap booster shot. Without that shot, students cannot be admitted to school, and currently almost 2,300 MVUSD sixth-graders still have not had their booster shots. “We want all our students to be able to come back to school on August 13 ready to learn,” said Ken Schmidt, MVUSD Director of Student Services. “Parents should get their children properly immunized now instead of waiting to the last minute and possibly having them miss school.” In 2010, approximately 9,000 cases of Whooping Cough were reported in California, which was the highest incidence in 60 years. The disease is spread by a persistent, severe cough, which can last for months. While dangerous for people of any age, Whooping Cough is especially threatening to infants. In 2010, 10 infant deaths in California were caused by the disease. While all children are required to be immunized before entering school, the Pertussis vaccine wears off over time, which is why the Tdap booster shot is required for incoming seventh-graders. Parents can get their children the Tdap booster at their doctor’s office, or at community clinics. More information is available at school health offices.
