MORENO VALLEY>> Data from the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report™ shows that only 48% of parents are aware of the “summer slide” — learning or reading skill loss during the summer months — and that one in five children in lower-income families do not read any books at all over the summer. This summer, Moreno Valley Unified School District helped address these needs by providing 15,600 students in grades Transitional Kindergarten (TK)–5 with take-home book packs customized by Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education, and media company. The “Spend Your Summer Reading” program, a special book distribution event, was held at Sunnymead Elementary on May 31 at 12 p.m.  First-grade students, families and faculty were joined by program initiator Superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora and special guest Clifford the Big Red Dog. Custom backpacks included a set of five free books from Scholastic to take home and keep. The packs also included a letter from the Superintendent Kedziora promoting the importance of summer reading.
