Mayor's Message Love thy neighbor

By Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez

Dear Moreno Valley Residents,

The continuing coronavirus crisis, which officials say will get worse before it gets better, is testing us all.

How we meet that test as a nation will depend on our strength as a self-governing people.

How we meet the test locally will depend on our strength as a community of neighbors.

As Mayor, and as a lifelong resident of our city, I have been privileged to witness amazing acts of kindness and generosity among our residents.

Now, more than ever before, we need to put kindness toward others above all else – especially kindness toward our senior citizens and those with existing health problems, who are most at risk of serious illness from the virus.

For example, when people rush to grocery stores to claim more than their fair share of food and supplies, the elderly – the ones most at risk to begin with – can’t keep up and are bound to get left behind.

While I understand the fear of the unknown caused by this virus, and the need to look after our own families first, I urge all residents of Moreno Valley to please remember to help the sick and elderly.

Help them get what they need at the grocery store.

Check in with your elderly neighbors so they know they’re not alone in all this.

In short, we all need to love thy neighbor.

That’s how we will get through this:  as a community of caring neighbors looking after each other.
