COLTON>> This fall, singles and couples are invited to dance with the squares for fun and friendship at the Norton Younglove Community Center, located at 459 Center St. in Highgrove, California. The event is hosted by the Riverside Single Swingers, a non-profit organization doing civic service in the Inland Empire, such annual fundraisers as the Bob Hope USO Benefit, the Pink Ribbon Benefit and the St. Jude's Children's Hospital Benefit. The organization participates in Inland Empire community parades and perform demos at other community events. Residents and community members are invited to attend the event with instruction every Tuesday, starting Sept. 6 at 6:30 p.m. Whether participants are refined, too shy, old, young or perhaps not fit, Riverside Single Swingers encourages everyone to join in on the fun. Men are especially encouraged to put away DVDs, computer games and loneliness and trade it in for music, clapping, stomping and dancing. The event does not require special attire since class time is come-as-you-are casual and there is no need to have a dancing partner. Participants can dancing to all styles of music and learn as the class goes. Line dancing instruction is often an added bonus during the classes. For participants worried they cannot dance, they are more than welcome to tap their foot and visit with the other wall flowers. Marylin George, club secretary of almost four years, said the classes are community oriented and inclusive for everyone. "This American-born, country-spun fun is historical, but with the times, it is online and global," George said in an email. "Square dancing has spread world-wide, but is everywhere. For you travelers, it is a great way to connect with neighbors all over the world. Get your start right here in the Inland Empire." The Riverside Single Swingers Square Dance Club was established in September 1958 to promote modern square dancing for all ages. Classes are offered from September through May each year and dances with other clubs around the Inland Empire and Southern California.
