Suspect Leads Police on Chase Before Assaulting K-9

Redlands Police arrested a 40-year-old Grand Terrace man Friday, June 1, for driving under the influence, hit and run, possession of narcotics and assault on a police dog.

Police received a report shortly before 8 p.m of a vehicle driving erratically in the area of Orange Street and Pearl Avenue. The reporting party also indicated that the driver had crashed into another car and fled.

Police located the vehicle, a white Honda Accord, driving southbound on Orange Street. As officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver accelerated, failing to yield and hitting a curb in front of the Redlands Police Annex at Cajon and Vine streets. The driver then sped toward an occupied restaurant, forcing patrons in the patio area to run to avoid being hit. The driver continued south, crossing into oncoming traffic lanes and striking another vehicle.

Officers pursued the vehicle to the intersection of Cajon Street and Fern Avenue, where the vehicle, overheating and with four flat tires, came to a stop.

After the driver ignored repeated commands in English and Spanish to show his hands and exit the vehicle, police deployed Duke, a Redlands Police Department K9, into the vehicle.

While still in the vehicle, the driver fought with the German shepherd, biting the dog on the snout, before he was pulled from the vehicle and taken into custody.

The driver, Timothy Arnold Carlos, was taken to a local hospital for treatment before being booked into West Valley Detention Center.

Duke was taken to a local veterinarian for treatment and evaluation. He was cleared of any significant injury.

Anyone with information regarding crime or suspicious activity is asked to contact Redlands Police Dispatch at (909) 798-7681 ext. 1.
