April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and San Bernardino Valley College is hosting several on-campus events. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, “The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and educate communities and individuals how to prevent sexual violence. By working together and pooling our resources during the month of April, we can highlight sexual violence as a major public health, human rights and social justice issue and reinforce the need for prevention efforts.” The Clothesline Project is a public visual display that bears witness to the violence against women. On campus, a clothesline is hung with shirts, each one decorated by the survivor herself or by someone who cares about her to represent a particular woman’s experience. The purpose is honor the survivors and victims and to help with the healing process for those who have lost a loved one or are survivors of this violence, while raising society's awareness of the problem. Remaining Events During the Month All events are open to the public. April 15: Sexual Assault and Social Media presented by San Bernardino Sexual Assault Services, Library Viewing Room, 12:30-1:30 p.m. April 23: Speak Out and Stand Up: Raising Awareness of Sexual Assault. Watch a video and participate in a discussion on date rape, alcohol and consent, men's role in stopping assault, and more. Library Viewing Room, 1:30-2:30 p.m. For more information, contact Officer Krysten Newbury at 909-384-4491.
