Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education has again named Cal State San Bernardino among the top colleges and universities in granting bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees to Hispanic students. In individual categories, the survey listed CSUSB as third in the nation in awarding degrees to Hispanics in Liberal Arts and Sciences; fourth in psychology; fifth in mathematics and statistics; and eighth in Homeland Security, law enforcement and firefighting. Overall, the survey listed CSUSB as 17th in the nation in conferring bachelor’s degrees to Hispanics, 17th in the nation with enrollment of Hispanic undergraduate students, and 52nd in the nation with enrollment of Hispanic graduate students. Currently, Latinos make up nearly 55 percent of the CSUSB student population. Annually, the magazine lists institutions of higher learning that have solid records in recruiting, retaining and graduating Hispanic students. The list is derived from the U.S. Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System program. The federal government has recognized Cal State San Bernardino as a Hispanic Serving Institution, which is defined as a non-profit college, university, or system/district that has at least a 25 percent Hispanic full-time equivalent enrollment. There are more than 250 Hispanic Serving Institutions in the United States.
