A Redlands man surrendered to police after firing a shot and barricading himself in his house for more than three hours Sunday, Sept. 28. Police responded to a call of shots fired in the 800 block of East San Bernardino Avenue at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday. After arriving on scene officers attempted to contact the suspect and other family members who were still in the home. Police were able to speak to the wife of the suspect who told officers her husband had been drinking and had fired a shot into the ceiling of their home before barricading himself in the bedroom. As tactical units and crisis negotiators responded, police evacuated four homes surrounding the suspect’s residence. Officers then made entry to the home and safely evacuated two adults and three children. Police set up a perimeter around the home while air support units from the Fontana Police Department and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department maintained surveillance. Officers continued to negotiate with the barricaded man who eventually came out of the residence at about 11:30 p.m. without further incident. Police recovered a 9mm handgun in the house. The 48-year-old man was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for evaluation. No injuries were reported during the standoff. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Redlands Police Dispatch at 909-798-7681.
