Fuggins, Dixon and Smith Sign Letters of Intent

SBVC Men’s Basketball forward Marcus Fuggins (Phoenix, AZ, Westwind Prep), guard Tymarieh “T.A.” Dixon (Chino Don Lugo) and forward Darren Smith (La Jolla Prep) have all signed letters of intent, with Fuggins heading to Morehead State, Dixon going to Cal Poly Pomona and Smith heading to Prairie View A&M. Fuggins was named Honorable Mention All-Foothill Conference this past winter and shooting 57.1% from the free throw line along with going 62.2% from the field. He finished the year with a total of 54 blocked shots, 176 total rebounds and 214 points, for a points per game average of 7.6. Dixon was named second team All-Foothill Conference, shooting 76.7% (46-60) from the free throw line along with going 143 for 283 from the field for a field goal shooting percentage of 50.5%. He finished the year with 209 total rebounds and 389 points for a points per game average of 14.2. Smith was named Honorable Mention All-Foothill Conference, shooting 61.3% (19-31) from the free throw line along with going 27 for 42 from the field for a field goal shooting percentage of 64.3%. He finished the year with 106 total rebounds and 104 points for a points per game average of 6.3. Under the tutelage of sixth-year coach Quincy Brewer, SBVC Men's Basketball ended the 2013-2014 season as the champions of Southern California, finishing as a runner-up in the State Title game. The run through the playoffs included hosting a SoCal Finals game versus old Conference rival Mt. San Jacinto. Coach Brewer was once again named Foothill Conference Coach of the Year and had two players named first team All-Foothill Conference, with guard Gerry Blakes (Inglewood Morningside) being named California Player of the Year. The team finished the season with a 29-8 overall record and a 9-1 conference record. They were rewarded with a two seed in the Southern California Regional Playoffs. SBVC Men’s Basketball opened up the Southern California Regional’s hosting the number 18 seed, Irvine Valley Lasers. SBVC looked to gain a measure of revenge for an opening round playoff loss at Irvine Valley during the 2010-2011 season, and then SBVC bounced the Lasers right out of the playoffs with a 65-49 victory. SBVC then hosted a pesky Glendale Vaqueros team coached by future CCCMBCA Hall of Famer Brian Beauchemin in his 35th season and former SBVC assistant coach Murphy Davis. The last time SBVC and Glendale played against one another in the playoffs was in the first round of the SoCal Regionals in 2003, where SBVC defeated Glendale. Once again, history repeated itself as SBVC grabbed a narrow victory over the Vaqueros and found themselves one win away from getting to the State Semifinals for the first time in four years. In a unique twist of fate, SBVC ended up hosting a Mt. San Jacinto Eagles team that left the Foothill Conference for perceived better opportunities elsewhere, but as in the past, the Eagles had to go through SBVC to move on to the State Finals. The intangible difference between these two juggernauts was who made their free throws and which team grabbed their rebounds, SBVC did both well and SBVC moved on. SBVC shot 73.5% (25-34) from the line and the Eagles were 55% (11-20) from the line, while SBVC had 44 total boards compared to Mt. San Jacinto who grabbed 39. Morehead State University is located in Morehead, Kentucky, which is about 105 miles southeast of Cincinnati, Ohio. The Morehead State Eagles play at Ellis T. Johnson Arena, and the team is coached by third-year coach, Sean Woods. According to the school’s athletics website, coach Woods commented, "We're excited to add Marcus to the program, he's another impact player who can push us toward our goal of winning an Ohio Valley Conference championship. Marcus has a high basketball IQ and very good instincts on the court. Marcus has the potential to be a big-time defender.” Morehead State competes in the Ohio Valley Conference and plays in NCAA Division I. Cal Poly Pomona is located in Pomona, California, which is about 26 miles east of Los Angeles, CA. The Cal Poly Broncos play at the Kellogg Gym, and the team is coached by head coach, Greg Kamansky, in his fifteenth year. Cal Poly competes in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and plays in NCAA Division II. Prairie View A&M University is located in the community of Prairie View, Texas which is less than 50 miles northwest of Houston. The PVAMU Panthers play at The William J. Nicks Building (Baby Dome) and are coached by eighth year veteran, Byron Rimm II. PVAMU is in the Southwestern Athletic Conference–West Division of NCAA Division I.
