Dive-In Movies, a community event hosted in Colton, took place at the Gonzales Community Center on Saturday July 26 and featured Happy Feet. "The event is family oriented and gives families a chance to swim and enjoy a family film together," said Recreation Coordinator Brandon Parra who has held his postion since 2009. "It's the best job I've ever had. Being a part of the community and seeing the crowd satisfaction is what makes this job so good." Aquatics Manager Sarah Quinte said, "I really love seeing the kids learning how to swim. Some of the people here are in the aquatics class. They started out not knowing how to swim and being afraid of the water. But now they love it! It's really cool to see that their not scared anymore. As cheesy as it sounds, I think it's really cool how you can see a movie while swimming. Even all the lifeguards sing along. It's a nice change of pace." Thomas Robles, a 3rd generation Coltonite who has been a Senior Recreation Leader over seven summers said, "The last event had around 150 people. I'm a swim teacher too. Educating them inspired me to become a teacher. My mother told about this job and encouraged me to volunteer. I never considered myself that type of person, but I gave it a shot. There's something about giving back to the community. I love it!" Volunteer Azucena Zepeda said, "I heard about this place through friends and family. I love meeting new people and interacting with them. This is my first year here. I started this summer. I hope to get job experience out of this for the future." Betty Sanchez shares, "My cousin knew about this. We came to the last month's one. I actually lived in Colton when I was younger. I like it here; it's nice, clean, and family oriented." Jessica Juarez shares, "I came here just to have a good time. One of my friends told me about this. She has the list of events that tell you about the community events. I want my daughter to have a good time and spend some family time together. I just wish I knew about this in the beginning and not at the end. It's a great event. I'm glad the community does this!" If you missed this event, there will be another one next month on Aug. 23. Robles says, "the next one is going to be The Little Mermaid!"
