With the Fourth of July right around the corner, the City of Grand Terrace wants to remind residents that fireworks are only allowed in designated areas on July 4 from 12:00 pm to 11:00 pm.

To ensure the overall safety and enforcement of this city ordinance, the San Bernardino County

Sheriff’s deputies will be conducting extra patrols in the city limits of Grand Terrace from July 2 through July 4.

“The goal is to suppress incidents of fireworks in the designated “No Fireworks Safety Zone” and the use of illegal fireworks throughout the city,” said the Sheriff’s department.

According to a Sheriff Department press release, penalties for the use of illegal, or “dangerous fireworks” include a fine of $2,500 on the first offense, and increases to $10,000 on the third and subsequent offenses,

Penalties for the use of “safe and sane fireworks” on dates, times and/or locations other than those permitted by the city ordinance include a fine of $250 on the first offense and increases to $750 on the third and subsequent offense, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies will also be contacting those who discharge fireworks on dates other than the designated an approved date of July 4 from 12:00 pm to 11:00 pm (municipal code section 8.112.010). Those found in violation of this code are subject to citation or arrest.

The City ordinance was signed into law in October of 2015 and is stated as follows:

8.112.010 - Dates and hours of sale and discharge:

Safe and sane fireworks as defined by Section 12529 of the California Health and Safety Code may be sold within the City during the period of June 28th through July 4th, 12:00 noon to 9:00 p.m. by persons possessing an appropriate permit pursuant to Section 8.112.020. The selling of fireworks without a permit is prohibited. Safe and sane fireworks may be discharged solely on July 4th, between the hours of 12:00 noon to 11:00 p.m.

Although deputies will be conducting extra patrol the days leading into July 4, they also urge residents to report an illegal fireworks usage to the department at 909-387-8313.

“Residents play an important role in our fireworks investigations. If you see something, say something. Call the authorities or WeTip hotline at 1-800-47-ARSON to anonymously report illegal fireworks,” Fire Marshal Mike Horton said in a previous statement.

“This proactive enforcement is in an effort to maintain public safety of the citizens of Grand Terrace,” said the Sheriff’s Department.

With areas of the City of Grand Terrace at a higher fire hazard risk, it is imperative to follow the guidelines of the city and county of San Bernardino so that all residents have a safe and wonderful Fourth of July.

Have a SAFE celebration!
