Members of the Moreno Valley community interested in serving on the Moreno Valley Unified School District School Board are encouraged to apply by Feb. 12 to be considered for a seat. The Board voted at its Jan. 20 meeting to appoint a new member to serve the remainder of the term vacated by Tracey B. Vackar, who was elected in November to serve as a member of the Riverside Community College District governing board. The term expires in 2016. Under state law, the School Board has 60 days from Vackar’s resignation (Jan. 19) to appoint a new member. The Board plans to interview all candidates. All candidate interviews and Board deliberations must be conducted in public. “Tracey Vackar’s shoes will be hard to fill,” said School Board President Gary E. Baugh. “But we are confident that there are many good people of considerable talent in our community who may want to serve.” According to California Education Code 35107, the appointee must be, “18 years of age or older, a citizen of the state, a resident of the school district, a registered voter, and not disqualified by the Constitution or laws of the state from holding a civil office,” and be, “eligible to be elected or appointed a member of a governing board of a school district without further qualifications.” The code also makes clear that, “An employee of a school district may not be sworn into office as an elected or appointed member of that school district’s governing board unless and until he or she resigns as an employee.” Those seeking appointment must complete an application form, available for download from the MVUSD website at www.mvusd.net, or at the Office of the Superintendent, 25634 Alessandro Boulevard in Moreno Valley. Applications must be returned in hard-copy form to the Office of the Superintendent no later than 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015; mailed applications must be postmarked on or before that date. No exceptions will be made for late or incomplete applications. Applications must be hand-delivered or mailed to: Moreno Valley Unified School District, Office of the Superintendent, 25634 Alessandro Blvd., Moreno Valley, Calif. 92553.
