California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) student Alazzia Gaoay, who oversees Coyote Radio’s daily business operations among her many tasks as the station’s student program director, is the winner of the 2014 Fred Jandt Communicator Award. Gaoay recently received the award at the annual Communication Arts Department Symposium. The award, which is presented by the Creative Media Services department and Coyote Radio, recognizes a communication studies student involved with the radio station that has demonstrated the application of communication skills. As the program director, Gaoay also helps train students in broadcasting and on the use of technical equipment and digital production software. She also helped develop promotional campaigns and represented the station for visiting VIPs. According to station manager Lacey Kendall, Gaoay “has consistently handled such tasks impressively. Over the past year, the station received national recognition as a broadcast learning laboratory three times and Alazzia played a key role in helping to make that possible. Gaoay, who is set to graduate in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies, hopes to use her communication skills in the field of large event management after graduation. The Fred Jandt Award was first introduced in 2010 and has only been granted twice since. It was named in honor of Fred E. Jandt, who founded Coyote Radio in 1987, and recently retired as dean of the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus. A $500 cash award will also be presented to Gaoay, donated personally by Jandt.

A residence shows visible damage from flooding, mud and debris following severe winter storms that began Dec. 23, which brought heavy rain and debris flows to mountain and high desert communities across San Bernardino County. This week, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors approved recovery-related fee waivers to help eligible property owners repair and rebuild as response and long-term recovery efforts continue.
