City Continues to Honor Hometown Heroes with Banners

The City of Redlands continues to honor its hometown heroes—residents and their immediate family serving in the military—with banners displayed throughout the downtown. New banners were recently installed in the city last month, bringing the total to 104 put on display since the program began in time for Veterans Day 2011. In 2011, the City Council approved the Hometown Heroes program, designed to recognize local residents actively serving in any branch of the U.S. Military. Banners displayed on City lampposts include the name and photograph of the resident and the branch of the service in which he or she serves. Service members are nominated for recognition through a City application available at the City of Redlands Human Resources Office, 35 Cajon St., Suite 10, or online at www.cityofredlands.org/node/786. Nominees must be Redlands residents or immediate family of a resident and be on active duty or have been on active duty as a member of the armed forces or a service person who has given his or her life in service of the country. Residency requirements will be waived for graduates of any Redlands high school or the University of Redlands. Banners cost $175 each. Banners are placed along Orange/Cajon Street and Redlands Boulevard, and will remain in place for one year. Retired banners will be presented to the service members’ families along with a proclamation from the City Council.
