Police Arrest One in Vehicle Pursuit

On Nov. 24 at approximately 2:31 p.m., officers from the Colton Police Department observed an occupied reported stolen 2011 Silver Chevrolet Impala on Cahuilla Street in Colton. Officers attempted to perform a traffic stop on the vehicle and the driver, Chaz Smith, allegedly accelerated and sped away in an attempt to evade officers, according to police. The pursuit went southbound on Reche Canyon Road, winding through the dirt roads leading into Moreno Valley. Colton police said the suspect then merged onto the 60 Freeway heading westbound, where he merged off the freeway and back onto the freeway again before eventually exiting the 60 westbound Freeway at Day Street, where he fled from the vehicle on foot. According to a release issued by Colton Police the suspect was apprehended by officers a short distance away from his vehicle. According to police, Smith was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and felony evading. He was booked into the San Bernardino County Jail on those charges.
