MORENO VALLEY>> California Baptist University's cheer team geared up for a new season this summer at camp in Las Vegas, Nev. once again grabbing a bid to defend its national championship next spring. Each year, teams from all over the country, across all divisions, meet up in Las Vegas for the National Cheerleaders Association/USA Cheer Collegiate Camp with hopes of accolades heading into the new season. CBU brought it once again and walked away as the champions, scoring higher than any other women or co-ed team from all NCAA divisions-including Division I-with 148 points. It gave the Lancers their paid bid to nationals, held next year in April in Daytona Beach, Fla., where they will look to win their unprecedented fifth-straight title. "We're off to another amazing season and our experience this past summer was a great way to start," said Coach Tami Fleming. "It's so rewarding to watch this team come together quickly and learn how to be great teammates both on and off the mat. I feel confident that this year will be one of our best yet, and we will work hard to continue staying at the top of our game." As a team, CBU was awarded the “Most Spirited” and won both the All-Girl Rally Routine and All-Girl Game Day Routine competitions. The Lancers came just shy of a triple sweep, taking second in the Game Day run off behind Division I New Mexico State. 13 Lancers picked up All-American distinctions after nailing the qualifying marks throughout the camp. The athletes are put through three skills tests-running tumbling, jumps and standing tumbling, and stunting. Evynn Richard, Stevie Greinke, Daisee Gonzalez, Alexis Humphrey, Ashley Douglas, Taylor Contratto, and Angela McGraw repeated as All-Americans. Six Lancers grabbed their first All-American honors in Maddie Black, Alyssa Cortez, Hayleigh Estrada, Kacie Gonzales, Breana Krombs and Liliana Martinez-Guerra. CBU not only competed in its regular team competition, four Lancers teamed up for the Stunt Group showdown and won. Douglas joined Jordan Arrington, Dazmyn Dull and Devyn Leal to put together as many stunts as possible in 45 seconds.
