Inland Empire United Way (IEUW) recently announced over $500,000 in commitments to local non-profit organizations. Among those receiving funding are a variety of programs assisting individuals and families in need throughout the Inland Empire. Grants up to $25,000 will be provided to 37 local non-profit organizations over the coming 12 months. Each organization was selected based on strong program outcomes in the areas of education, health and financial stability. Among recipients are homeless shelters, after school programs, tutoring organizations, and health programs. A vital part of IEUW's mission is partnering with other results-oriented non-profits in the region that are equally dedicated to improving the lives and futures of low-income families and their children in our community. Each year, a volunteer review team – comprised of local donors and community representatives – conducts a diligent review of programs to determine the best investment of United Way's dollars. Pomona's Learning Center at Fairplex will receive support for the Career and Technical Education Center, which works to prepare underprivileged youth for future employment. Ranging from early childhood education to vocational training, The Learning Center is effectively addressing United Way's goal of moving individuals from poverty to self-sufficiency. "Inland Empire United Way is a valued partner with The Learning Centers at Fairplex, but especially of our efforts to prepare students for career paths through our Career Technical Education Center," said Michelle DeMott, vice president of branding and knowledge management at Fairplex. In addition to programs funded through the Community Impact Grant process, Inland Empire United Way raised an additional $1,041,000 in the region that was distributed to a variety of non-profit organizations through donor designations. A residence shows visible damage from flooding, mud and debris following severe winter storms that began Dec. 23, which brought heavy rain and debris flows to mountain and high desert communities across San Bernardino County. This week, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors approved recovery-related fee waivers to help eligible property owners repair and rebuild as response and long-term recovery efforts continue.
