Are you a senior citizen and enjoy playing tennis? Well today is your lucky day! Once a month, the Perris Hill Senior Center hosts a tennis tournament ran by John Thau and Lakeisha Jackson. The monthly tennis tournament is being held through June 2014. What is the Perris Hill Senior Center you may ask? It's a place, first opened in 1986, where discounted meals, chess games, ping-pong, pool, and so much more are available to local seniors. John Thau states that the game of tennis for senior citizens “promotes health, well-being, exercise.” The monthly tennis tournament is in a pilot program, and if it ends up successful, it will continue on. For the tournament that took place February 15, there was a total of eighteen participants, which made nine teams. These nine teams were divided into two age groups (Under 65 as well as 65 and older). The teams played what is called “Brown Robin”, as Thau puts it. “Brown Robin” is a term used for every team playing everyone. These teams come from various places throughout the Inland Empire (San Bernardino, Highland, the mountains, Redlands, and Yucaipa). The cost is $10 per team to enter this tournament. For the top three mixed teams, there are medals given out (gold, silver, bronze). Senior Group Finalists: Gold Medals to Adela Gilbertson and Santiago Gonzalez, Silver Medals to Amy Garrett and Ron Bone, and Bronze Medals to Jennifer Owens and George Ledford. Super Senior Group Finalist: Gold Medals to Brenda and John Fallara, Silver Medals to Teresa Morris and Hum Bui, Bronze Medals to Elaine and Jerry Potter. Senior citizens, what are you waiting for? Go sign up for this monthly tournament. To register, please visit Perris Hill Senior Center and pick up a flyer.
